A 63-year-old Malaysian housewife has lost RM87,975.04 after falling victim to an alleged online investment scam that promised extraordinary returns, forcing her to draw upon personal savings and pawn her jewellery to finance a nonexistent investment scheme.
The incident in Terengganu has exposed the financial dangers associated with fraudulent investment advertisements circulating on social media, where promises of rapid wealth can persuade individuals to commit substantial sums before establishing whether an investment opportunity is legitimate.
According to Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor, the victim, a resident of Wakaf Tembusu in Kuala Nerus, first encountered an advertisement promoting a stock investment opportunity on Facebook on October 3, 2026.
The alleged scheme offered an extraordinary proposition: investors were told they could receive RM25,000 in returns for every RM450 invested.
Attracted by the advertised returns, she subsequently contacted a male suspect through WhatsApp to obtain further information about the investment arrangement.
Between October 3 and October 12, the victim reportedly completed nine separate payments totalling RM87,975.04, using money from her savings alongside funds obtained by pawning jewellery.
The willingness to surrender personal valuables underscores the extent to which promises of extraordinary financial rewards can influence investment decisions.
However, the anticipated profits never materialised.
According to police, the woman eventually became suspicious after failing to receive any investment returns or recover her initial capital. Attempts to contact the individual who had promoted the scheme were also unsuccessful.
She subsequently lodged a police report at 7.58pm on October 18.
