📊 Gold / FX / Index Daily Update | 20 August 2026
Dear traders — yesterdays biggest market move did not come from the Fed.
It came from the U.S. Treasury.
Treasury unexpectedly doubled the size of planned long-dated bond buybacks, causing long-term yields to fall as much as 10 basis points and the U.S. dollar index to drop around 0.8%.
The result:
🟡 Gold surged toward $4,500
₿ Bitcoin jumped toward $69,000
📈 U.S. stocks recovered
💵 USD weakened sharply
📉 Long-term Treasury yields retreated
🟡 GOLD WATCH — XAUUSD
Quick View:
Spot Gold surged more than 3% to approximately $4,488, briefly approaching the $4,500 psychological area.
Early Thursday, Gold remains around $4,500-$4,512.
Key levels:
$4,450 support / $4,500 pivot / $4,525-$4,550 resistance
Why watch it?
Gold currently has several competing drivers:
✅ lower long-term Treasury yields
✅ weaker USD
✅ fiscal and debt concerns
✅ geopolitical uncertainty
versus:
⚠️ relatively hawkish Fed minutes
⚠️ persistent inflation concerns
⚠️ possible profit-taking after a major one-day rally
🔥 OIL WATCH — WTI / BRENT
Oil remains close to four-week highs.
Early Thursday:
Brent: approximately $91.87
WTI: approximately $85-$86.
Key levels:
Brent $90 / $92 / $95
WTI $84 / $85-$86 / $88
Why watch it?
Middle East supply uncertainty remains unresolved.
The U.S. says the Strait of Hormuz is open, while Iran continues to dispute that assessment and many shipowners remain cautious about using the route.
At the same time, U.S. crude inventories unexpectedly increased by about 4.4 million barrels, limiting some upside pressure.
💵 FX WATCH — USDJPY / EURUSD
USDJPY
The dollar weakened around 0.9% against the yen on Wednesday after the Treasury announcement.
Key levels:
157.00-157.50 support / 158.00 pivot / 159.00-160.00 resistance
The yield decline has changed the immediate USDJPY setup.
The pair remains sensitive to:
• U.S. Treasury yields
• BOJ tightening expectations
• Japanese bond yields
• intervention policy
• carry-trade unwinding
EURUSD
EURUSD has moved toward approximately 1.168 as the dollar weakened sharply.
Key levels:
1.1600 / 1.1670-1.1680 / 1.1700-1.1750
📈 US INDEX WATCH — US30 / NAS100 / SPX500
Wednesday:
Dow +0.22% → 53,463.05
S&P 500 +0.21% → 7,707.98
Nasdaq +0.16% → 26,331.09.
Stocks recovered as borrowing-cost pressure eased, but the rebound was modest compared with the much larger moves in Gold, USD and Bitcoin.
That suggests investors remain selective.
🤖 AI STOCKS WATCH — NVIDIA / SEMICONDUCTORS
After Tuesdays approximately 5% semiconductor selloff, Wednesday remained mixed.
Nvidia: -1.0% → $217.56
Intel: -4.0% → $92.80.
Meanwhile:
Tesla +4.3% → $351.12
Alphabet +0.2% → $344.72.
Key AI focus:
• Nvidia $215-$220 area
• Intel weakness
• AI infrastructure debt
• financing costs
• long-term Treasury yields
• semiconductor breadth
• NAS100 recovery
The key issue for AI is becoming increasingly clear:
Strong demand is not the only question anymore — the cost of financing massive AI infrastructure investment also matters.
Reuters analysis notes that rising AI-related corporate debt issuance has become part of the debate around pressure in long-term bond markets.
🌏 ASIA INDEX WATCH
HKG33
Wednesday approximately 25,495, broadly flat.
Key levels:
25,000 / 25,500 / 26,000
Chinas benchmark lending rates remain a key regional policy focus. Beijing has been reluctant to use aggressive monetary easing despite weaker July domestic-demand data.
JPN225
Wednesday:
Nikkei -3.2% → 65,326.42.
Thursday morning, the Nikkei is recovering around 1%+ as U.S. yields retreat.
Key levels:
65,000 / 66,000 / 67,000
