IB TWS now defaults overnight orders to OVERNIGHT + DAY
Abstract:Interactive Brokers' latest TWS beta build now defaults overnight orders to OVERNIGHT + DAY instead of OVERNIGHT-only, with an opt-out setting and resolved Adaptive Limit API issues.

Interactive Brokers has changed how its Trader Workstation (TWS) platform handles overnight orders, a shift that could affect how long a trader's order stays live unless they adjust their settings. The update appears in the latest beta build of TWS, which the company's official release notes describe as “Default TIF Change for Overnight Trading, API Improvements.”
The change centers on the Time in Force (TIF) field, the instruction that tells the platform how long an order should remain active. For overnight trading, TWS now defaults this field to OVERNIGHT + DAY rather than the previous OVERNIGHT-only behavior.
What changed in order entry
To streamline order entry for overnight trading, TWS now defaults the Time in Force to OVERNIGHT + DAY in two situations: when a user selects the OVERNIGHT exchange, and when a user creates an order for a contract traded on the OVERNIGHT exchange.
To make the new default easier to spot, OVERNIGHT + DAY has been moved above OVERNIGHT in the TIF dropdown menu, signaling that it is now the preferred selection.
How to opt out of the new default
Traders who prefer the previous OVERNIGHT-only behavior are not locked into the change. A new “Time In Force for Overnight Trading” setting lets users opt out, and it can be found under Settings, then Orders, then Smart Routing Config.
The same setting is also accessible through the “Edit SMART Routing Settings” link available in the OVERNIGHT/OVERNIGHT + DAY TIF tooltip.
What stays the same
The default change does not remove manual control. Users can continue to manually modify the TIF on individual orders as needed, and API-generated orders are not affected by the change.
API improvements
Alongside the TIF change, Interactive Brokers resolved issues affecting Overnight API orders submitted using the Adaptive Limit (Adaptive LMT) order type. The company said the fix improves order handling and reliability for API traders.
Interactive Brokers' official release notes for Build 10.50 were last updated on August 13, 2026. The update was reported by FX News Group on August 17, 2026.
