Hedging is one of the more useful risk-management tools in forex, but not every broker permits it. Whether you can hold two opposing positions in the same pair depends on the broker, the account type, the platform and the rules of the jurisdiction where the account is booked.

Some regulators restrict retail hedging, so a permission offered by one company in a group may not apply to an account opened with another. This guide covers how hedging brokers differ from those that do not allow it, and sets out what the recorded account data shows for each pick.

WikiFX applied four criteria to each broker. First, whether hedging is permitted, and under which account types and entity. Second, platform mechanics: how the order ticket and position handling treat a second, opposing position. Third, cost: spreads, commission and the swap charged while both legs stay open. Fourth, regulatory standing, since the permission follows the licensed company rather than the brand. The assessment works from recorded account fields rather than hands-on testing: no live account was opened and no execution quality is claimed. Scores were requested at build time in English with the United States country setting.

EC markets

EC markets

Overall ★★★★☆ 4.5/5 (WikiFX score 9.25/10)
Regulations FCA (United Kingdom), FMA (New Zealand), ASIC (Australia), FSA (Seychelles), FSCA (South Africa)
Accounts ECN, STD, PRO
Minimum spread 0.0
Maximum leverage 1:1000
Minimum deposit 0.01
Platforms MT4, MT5, Self-developed
Established 2012
Recorded permissions Hedging, Expert advisors, Scalping

EC Markets records hedging as supported on all three of its accounts, ECN, STD and PRO, alongside scalping and expert advisors. Spreads start at 0.0 on the ECN and PRO entries and 1.0 on the STD entry, each with a minimum deposit of 0.01 and leverage of 1:1000. That makes it the clearest account-level record of the six, because the permission and the trading terms sit in the same rows.

Hedging does not remove exposure. A locked position still consumes margin on both legs. At 1:1000 a small adverse move can absorb a large share of the balance, so the strategy can fail on margin rather than on direction. Commission and swap charges are not recorded, and the cost of holding two positions overnight is exactly what a hedged trade depends on. Ask the onboarding entity how offsetting positions are margined, and for the swap schedule on both legs.

Pros

  • Hedging is recorded as available on all three accounts
  • Every account records spread, funding and leverage
  • Scalping and expert advisors are marked as supported
  • Two accounts quote spreads from 0.0
  • Five licence records include FCA and ASIC entries

Cons

  • Commission and swap costs are not recorded
  • Holding two legs at 1:1000 consumes margin quickly

GTCFX

GTCFX

Overall ★★★★☆ 4.5/5 (WikiFX score 9.23/10)
Regulations FCA (United Kingdom), ASIC (Australia), VFSC (Vanuatu), FSCA (South Africa)
Accounts ECN, Standard
Minimum spread 0.0
Maximum leverage 1:500
Platforms MT5, CTrader, Self-developed, MT4
Established 2010
Recorded permissions Hedging, Expert advisors, Scalping

GTCFX records hedging as available on both of its accounts. The ECN entry shows a spread of 0.0 with leverage of 1:500, while the Standard entry shows a spread of 1.0 with leverage of 1:2000. Scalping and expert advisors are marked as supported on each, and four platforms are listed, including MT5, MT4 and cTrader. No minimum deposit appears on either entry.

The leverage split deserves attention before any hedged position is opened. A 1:2000 cap on the Standard account changes both the size a balance can support and the cash effect of an adverse move. The figure may belong to one entity rather than to every client. Neither entry records commission or swap terms, so the cost of carrying two legs overnight is unknown from this data. That cost often decides whether a hedge is worth holding.

Pros

  • Hedging is recorded on both accounts
  • Spreads and leverage are stated for each account
  • Four platforms are listed, including cTrader
  • cTrader is available alongside MT4 and MT5
  • Leverage is stated separately for each account

Cons

  • Leverage differs sharply between the two accounts
  • No minimum deposit, commission or swap terms are recorded

ATFX

ATFX

Overall ★★★★☆ 4.5/5 (WikiFX score 9.21/10)
Regulations FSA (Seychelles), FCA (United Kingdom), CYSEC (Cyprus), ASIC (Australia), FSCA (South Africa), SFC (China Hong Kong ), SERC (Cambodia)
Accounts Raw Pro, Edge, Raw, Standard
Minimum spread 0.0
Maximum leverage 1:400
Platforms Self-developed, MT5, MT4
Established 2015
Recorded permissions Hedging, Expert advisors, Scalping

ATFX records four accounts, Raw Pro, Raw, Edge and Standard, and marks hedging, scalping and expert advisors as available on every one. Spreads start at 0.0, 0.0, 0.8 and 1.1 respectively, and all four carry the same leverage of 1:400. That shared cap makes the accounts easier to compare than the entries where leverage changes with the account type.

The missing figures are the constraint. No minimum deposit is recorded, and commission, swap and instrument coverage are absent, so the cost of running two positions at once cannot be calculated from this record. A 1:400 cap also means a hedged pair consumes margin on both legs at a modest leverage. That limits the position a balance can support and can force a reduction at the least convenient moment. The permission is only the first question: the swap schedule for the chosen account decides the rest.

Pros

  • All four accounts record hedging as supported
  • A single leverage figure applies across accounts
  • Spreads are distinct and recorded for each account
  • Four account labels cover raw and standard pricing
  • Seven licence records name onshore entities

Cons

  • No minimum deposit is recorded
  • Commission and swap costs are absent from every entry

XM

XM

Overall ★★★★☆ 4.5/5 (WikiFX score 9.15/10)
Regulations CMA (Kenya), CYSEC (Cyprus), ASIC (Australia), DFSA (United Arab Emirates), FSC (Belize), FSCA (South Africa)
Accounts Stock, Micro, Standard, Ultra Low Spread Standard & Micro
Minimum spread 0.6
Maximum leverage 1:1000
Minimum deposit 0.01
Platforms MT4, MT5, Self-developed
Established 2010
Recorded permissions Hedging, Expert advisors, Scalping

XM shows why hedging has to be checked per account. Three entries, Micro, Standard and Ultra Low Spread Standard & Micro, record hedging as supported, but the Stock account records it as unavailable. The Micro and Standard accounts show leverage of 1:1000 with minimum funding of 0.1 and 0.01, and the Ultra Low Spread entries start from a spread of 0.6 rather than 1.0.

A reader who assumes the whole brand behaves the same way would be wrong on the Stock entry. The same caution applies to platform access, since a Stock account is not a forex account. Spread figures are starting values without commission, and swap terms are not recorded, which matters because a hedged position is usually held across at least one rollover. A green light on hedging is not a cost answer; ask the chosen account for its swap schedule.

Pros

  • Three accounts record hedging as supported
  • Funding and leverage values are recorded for the forex accounts
  • The Stock account is clearly marked as not supporting hedging
  • An Ultra Low Spread option sits beside the standard accounts
  • Micro account funding is recorded at 0.1

Cons

  • Hedging is unavailable on the Stock account
  • Swap and commission terms are not recorded

CMC MARKETS

CMC MARKETS

Overall ★★★★☆ 4.5/5 (WikiFX score 8.84/10)
Regulations ASIC (Australia), FCA (United Kingdom), FMA (New Zealand), MAS (Singapore), CIRO (Canada), BaFin (Germany)
Accounts CMC Markets Platform , MT4/MT5
Minimum spread 0.0
Maximum leverage 1:200
Minimum deposit 0.01
Platforms Self-developed, MT4, MT5
Established 2001
Recorded permissions Hedging, Scalping

CMC Markets treats hedging as a platform setting: netting can be switched off inside the platform, so both legs stay visible and can be closed independently. The pair count is broad enough to cover most major and cross combinations, and stop-loss orders with a refundable premium give the short leg its own protection.

The trade-offs are structural. Hedging only works once netting is switched off, which is a platform setting rather than an account type, and MetaTrader product depth is limited compared with the broker's own platform. Both legs keep incurring spread and swap while they stay open, so the holding cost has to be priced for the entity that would hold the account.

Pros

  • Hedge by toggling off netting in the platform
  • Broad pair coverage across instruments
  • Stop-loss orders with a refundable premium

Cons

  • Hedging requires netting to be disabled first
  • Limited MetaTrader product depth
  • Both legs keep incurring spread and swap

IG's hedging case rests on platform mechanics rather than on the size of its instrument list. A force-open or net-off control lets a trader decide whether a second, opposing position should be held separately or netted against the first, which is the practical difference between a hedged account and a netting-only one. The order ticket also previews the position and its cost before the order is submitted.

Stops come in normal and trailing forms, plus a premium-backed version, which matters for the short leg of a hedge because it needs its own exit rule. The trade-off is structural: commission and swap are charged on both legs, so the cost of holding the hedge depends on the entity that would hold the account, not on the netting toggle alone. Confirm the current schedule before treating the control as the whole answer.

Pros

  • Force-open and net-off control in the platform
  • Trade ticket previews position and cost
  • Normal, trailing and premium-backed stops

Cons

  • No advanced OCO orders on its own platform
  • Commission and swap are charged on both legs
  • Pricing tiers have to be checked for the specific account

FOREX.com

FOREX.com is the pick for indirect hedging. A large CFD range, and knock-out options in selected regions, let a trader offset exposure without opening an opposing spot position, and OCO orders, trailing stops and a close-all control cover the exit side of the trade.

The same feature set explains the limits. Direct spot hedging is not offered to United States retail clients, so the strategy has to be built from related instruments, and stocks or futures sit in a separate StoneX account, which complicates a hedge that mixes asset classes. Two legs keep paying spread and financing, so confirm the entity, the instrument and the margin rules before relying on the workaround.

Pros

  • Large CFD range for indirect hedging
  • Knock-out options in selected regions
  • OCO, trailing stop and close-all tools

Cons

  • No direct spot hedging for United States retail
  • Stocks and futures need a separate StoneX account
  • Both legs keep paying spread and financing

How to hedge forex

  • Check that hedging is allowed where you trade Permission depends on your country of residence and on the framework the broker operates under. Some regulators restrict retail hedging and require positions to be netted and closed oldest-first, so confirm the rules that apply to you and to the entity holding the account.
  • Choose a broker whose hedge will actually execute A hedge that fails to fill leaves the original position fully exposed, so the reliability of execution matters as much as the permission itself. Check the regulatory standing of the company that would hold the account before relying on a second position.
  • Turn netting off and pick the method Some platforms only accept an opposing position after account netting is disabled. With hedging enabled, both positions stay open with their own stops or take-profit levels; with netting enabled, the opposite trade simply reduces the net position instead of creating a second one.
  • Open the offsetting position The hedge can be placed on the same pair or on a related instrument such as a CFD, future or option, and it can cover part of the position rather than all of it. An option, for example, can be used to guard against a short-term pullback while the original trade stays open.
  • Budget for the extra cost Two positions mean two sets of trading costs, including spread and overnight financing, for as long as both legs stay open. Those charges belong in the plan before the hedge is opened, not after.

FAQs

Is forex hedging illegal in the US?

For retail forex clients in the United States, hedging is not permitted: brokers are required to net positions and close trades on a first-in-first-out basis. Elsewhere the answer depends on the jurisdiction and on the entity that holds the account, so the rule has to be checked rather than assumed.

What is the difference between hedging and netting?

A hedging account keeps two opposing positions open at the same time, each with its own stop or take-profit level. A netting account merges them: an opposing trade reduces or increases the single net position instead of creating a second one, and positions are typically closed oldest-first. Which model applies depends on the platform and on the regulator.

Which broker is best for hedging?

There is no single answer, because permission is recorded per account and the cost of holding two legs varies by entity. Compare whether the account carries the hedging flag, how offsetting positions are margined, and what the swap schedule says. The table above shows which of these records answer each question.
