A suspected online fraud operation involving romance scams and fraudulent gold investment schemes has been dismantled in Penang, after police arrested 35 foreign nationals during coordinated raids on two residential properties in Bayan Lepas, Penang.
The arrests were carried out on Monday by the Barat Daya district police Commercial Crime Investigation Division, working alongside the Penang Contingent Commercial Crime Investigation Department. The suspects comprise 33 Chinese men, one Chinese woman and one Taiwanese man, according to Barat Daya police chief ACP Anuwal Ab Wahab.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the group had allegedly been operating since September, using the Telegram messaging platform to approach Chinese women between the ages of 18 and 46. Investigators suspect that the operation combined online romantic manipulation with fraudulent gold investment propositions, a tactic that can exploit victims' emotional trust before introducing promises of financial returns.
The use of romance as an entry point is particularly concerning because such schemes can blur the distinction between personal relationships and investment decisions. Victims may initially believe they are communicating with genuine romantic interests before being encouraged to transfer money into purported investment opportunities. In these circumstances, emotional manipulation can become a mechanism for extracting funds rather than merely a means of establishing online relationships.
During the raids, authorities seized 119 mobile phones, three laptop computers and various chargers believed to have been used to facilitate the suspected criminal activities. The total estimated value of the confiscated equipment was approximately RM60,000.
All 35 individuals have been remanded to assist police investigations under Section 420 and Section 120B of the Penal Code, covering cheating and criminal conspiracy respectively. Their involvement remains subject to the outcome of the investigation, and the arrests do not in themselves establish guilt.
Criminal networks can first establish familiarity, cultivate trust and gradually introduce seemingly attractive opportunities before requesting deposits. Gold investment offers promoted through private messaging applications should be approached with particular caution, especially when returns are promised without verifiable documentation or regulatory oversight. Investors should independently verify the identity and licensing status of any investment operator before transferring funds, regardless of how convincing the person making the offer may appear.
