Market Overview
Markets focused on three major themes on Wednesday.
First, U.S. Treasury yields climbed across the curve, with the 10-year yield closing at 5.006%, breaking above the key 5% threshold. It marked the first close above 5% since October 2023. The benchmark yield reached an intraday high of 5.041%, its highest level since July 2007, while the 30-year Treasury yield rose to 5.363%.
Second, multiple supply disruptions across the Middle East sent crude oil prices sharply higher. Saudi Aramco canceled some shipments to Europe, vessel traffic was suspended at the Red Sea port of Yanbu, and three Libyan oil fields halted production. WTI crude settled at $105.83 per barrel, up 4.38%, while Brent crude gained 2.90% to $108.75, with both benchmarks reaching their highest levels since May 19. U.S. diesel futures also climbed to another record high.
Third, the combination of rising Treasury yields and surging oil prices weighed heavily on risk assets. The S&P 500 fell 0.45% to 7,585.73, its lowest level since August. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.63%, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.78%. In crypto markets, Bitcoin slid 3.8% to around $76,000, while Ether fell 3.9%.
The Federal Reserve will announce its interest rate decision today. Meanwhile, China's industrial production rose 5.2% year over year in August, while retail sales increased just 0.4%.
Key Themes to Watch● Fed Decision Arrives as 10-Year Treasury Yield Breaks Above 5%
The Federal Reserve will release its interest rate decision, policy statement, and Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) today, followed by a press conference with Fed Chair Warsh.
With the 10-year Treasury yield now above 5% and oil prices surging sharply in a single session, markets will be watching closely to see how the Fed balances risks to economic growth against renewed inflationary pressures.
Any meaningful shift in the dot plot, economic projections, or policy language could amplify volatility across both the Treasury market and risk assets.
● Middle East Supply Disruptions Raise the Risk of a Second Inflation Wave
Saudi Aramco's cancellation of shipments to Europe, Iran's claim that it is exercising control over the Strait of Hormuz, and another record high in U.S. diesel futures are putting energy prices back at the center of the inflation outlook.
If disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz persist, elevated oil prices could prove increasingly sticky. Higher energy costs would gradually feed through to transportation, logistics, and production expenses, potentially adding further upward pressure to long-term Treasury yields that are already at elevated levels.
Key Events to Watch
