U.S. Treasury Pledges Further Joint Intervention to Support Yen as BOJ Holds Rates
خلاصہ۔:U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled readiness for further coordinated FX intervention with Japan to curb disorderly Yen depreciation, pushing USD/JPY below the 158 level following the BOJ's decision to hold rates at 1%.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has issued a stern warning to currency speculators, asserting that Washington stands ready to deploy further coordinated foreign exchange interventions alongside Japan if “disorderly” depreciation of the Japanese Yen continues. The aggressive rhetoric underscores a unified bilateral effort to stabilize the currency after it recently plummeted to a 40-year low against the greenback.
Coordinated Action Triggers Sharp Yen Rebound
Following the first joint U.S.-Japan Yen-buying operation since 2011, the USD/JPY pair experienced a violent repricing. The Yen surged more than 2% in late-week trading, breaking decisively below the 158-per-dollar threshold. The currency's aggressive rebound erased nearly 4% of the losses sustained earlier in the week, trading near 157.71 as markets digested the structural shift in FX policy.
The intervention received high-level political backing, with President Donald Trump endorsing the move as a testament to bilateral economic cooperation. This unified front presents a formidable barrier for dollar bulls attempting to test new highs.
BOJ Policy and Liquidity Backstops
The intervention aligns with a critical macroeconomic juncture for Japan. On Friday, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) elected to hold its short-term interest rate steady at 1%. However, the central bank maintained a distinctly hawkish bias, signaling absolute readiness to implement further rate hikes should underlying inflationary pressures persist.
From a structural liquidity perspective, Bessent highlighted the Treasury's support for expanding the Federal Reserve's Foreign and International Monetary Authorities (FIMA) Repo Facility. This expansion acts as a critical liquidity backstop, ensuring that dollar funding markets remain stable while allied central banks conduct large-scale FX interventions. Furthermore, Bessent characterized the current Japanese administration's fiscal and monetary trajectory as an “exciting new phase of Abenomics,” suggesting deep U.S. confidence in Japan's broader macroeconomic realignment.
