RBA Maintains a Hawkish Stance
RBA Governor Michele Bullock stated that restoring price stability remains the central objective of monetary policy. Despite a more challenging global economic environment, the Bank‘s commitment to achieving both price stability and full employment remains unchanged. She noted that the full impact of this year’s interest rate hikes is still filtering through the economy, making it too early to determine whether policy is sufficiently restrictive. As a result, future policy decisions will continue to be data dependent.
She also emphasized that higher energy prices could further lift overall inflation, as rising fuel costs continue to pass through to other goods and services. While monetary policy cannot solve productivity challenges, it can provide a stable environment for the economy by maintaining low inflation and stable employment. If inflation declines more slowly than expected, the RBA remains prepared to raise interest rates further. FXTRADING believes:The RBA is more likely to remain on hold in the near term, but its overall policy stance remains hawkish. As long as inflation stays above target, markets should continue to price in the possibility of additional policy tightening, which is expected to provide ongoing support for the Australian dollar.

US PMI Climbs to an Eight-Month High
The S&P Global US Composite PMI Flash rose from 51.9 to 53.6 in July, reaching its highest level in eight months and indicating a solid start to the third quarter. The services sector remained the primary driver of growth, with the Business Activity Index increasing from 51.2 to 53.6, also an eight-month high. Manufacturing expansion eased slightly, with the Manufacturing PMI slipping from 53.9 to 53.8, while the Manufacturing Output Index declined from 56.2 to 53.6, suggesting that the boost from inventory rebuilding is beginning to fade.
The survey showed that US businesses resumed hiring for the first time in three months, pointing to annualized GDP growth of around 2.0% in the third quarter, up from approximately 1.2% in the second quarter. FXTRADING believes:The US economy continues to expand, with the services sector remaining the key growth engine and the labor market showing further improvement. However, manufacturing momentum has moderated and cost pressures are rebuilding.

ECB Maintains a Hawkish Bias
European Central Bank Governing Council member Peter Kažimír said that at least one more interest rate hike is still needed to ensure inflation returns sustainably to target. He believes that although economic conditions have improved recently, the recovery is not yet strong enough to warrant a change in policy direction. Only if incoming economic data and geopolitical conditions improve significantly would the ECB consider reassessing its future rate path.
He stressed that policymakers should remain vigilant about the risk of higher energy prices feeding through into wages, services, and consumer spending. If broader inflationary pressures emerge, the ECB may need to adopt a more restrictive stance than markets currently expect. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent policy communication to avoid creating confusion over the ECB‘s future direction. FXTRADING believes:Bringing inflation under control remains the ECB’s top priority, and energy prices will continue to be a key factor in future policy decisions. If energy costs continue to rise, the likelihood of further monetary tightening will increase, providing continued support for the euro.

UK PMI Returns to Expansion Territory
The UK Composite PMI Flash rose from 49.3 to 52.1 in July, returning to expansion territory and reaching a three-month high, signaling an improved start to the third quarter. The Manufacturing PMI increased from 52.5 to 52.8, while the Manufacturing Output Index climbed from 52.6 to 53.6, its highest level in 22 months. Meanwhile, the Services Business Activity Index rebounded from 48.8 to 51.8, returning to growth as tourism, consumer spending, and seasonal demand improved.
Despite the stronger PMI readings, the UK economy continues to face challenges. Although lower oil prices in early July eased some cost pressures, the cost of living remains elevated, consumer spending is recovering only gradually, and businesses remain cautious about hiring. FXTRADING believes:Economic sentiment in the UK has improved, with manufacturing continuing to lead the recovery and the services sector returning to expansion. However, consumer spending and employment remain slow to recover, suggesting the Bank of England is likely to remain cautious in the near term as it balances inflation risks against economic growth.
