Over RM102 Million Crypto Seized in Romance Scam Crackdown
خلاصہ۔:Federal prosecutors in the United States have moved to recover more than 25 million dollars (over RM102 million) in cryptocurrency assets, filing five civil forfeiture complaints. Investigators traced the targeted funds through hundreds of cryptocurrency wallet addresses, piecing together a trail that connected more than 270 suspected investment fraud transactions and more than 200 individual romance scam victims with several identified in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area specifically.

Federal prosecutors in the United States have moved to recover more than 25 million dollars (over RM102 million) in cryptocurrency assets, filing five civil forfeiture complaints in the District of Columbia tied to an extensive international web of romance and investment fraud that claimed hundreds of victims across North America.
The cases, stemming from investigations led by the United States Secret Service, are among the most substantial enforcement actions taken under the Scam Center Strike Force, a dedicated federal task force that launched in November 2025. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Strike Force has to date recovered in excess of 800 million dollars across all its operations.
Investigators traced the targeted funds through hundreds of cryptocurrency wallet addresses, piecing together a trail that connected more than 270 suspected investment fraud transactions and more than 200 individual romance scam victims with several identified in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area specifically.
The two largest complaints seek approximately 12.1 million dollars linked to online romance schemes, and 10.4 million dollars tied to fraudulent investment platforms that presented themselves as legitimate crypto trading portals. Three smaller complaints target amounts of approximately 2.39 million dollars, 1.23 million dollars and 285,000 dollars respectively.
The details embedded in the complaints lay bare the psychological mechanics of these scams. In one case, a victim attempted to withdraw funds from what appeared to be a cryptocurrency investment account, at which point the fraudsters severed all contact and disappeared with the balance. In another, the victim had already suffered a prior financial loss and was subsequently approached by a separate group of fraudsters who claimed they could retrieve the stolen funds for a fee, which is a tactic widely known in enforcement circles as a recovery scam, in which criminals deliberately circle back to exploit individuals who are already in financial distress and emotionally primed to take any offered lifeline.
The use of cryptocurrency as the instrument of choice across all five complaints is not incidental. Digital assets offer fraudsters a degree of pseudo anonymity, rapid cross border transferability, and in many cases, irreversibility that makes them structurally attractive for laundering the proceeds of fraud. The Secret Service's ability to trace these funds through layered wallet addresses, that is a process requiring significant technical capability, marks a meaningful evolution in the United States government's approach to financial crime in the digital asset space.
For Malaysian investors and regulators, the implications of this enforcement wave are direct. Malaysia's Securities Commission and Bank Negara Malaysia have both flagged the rapid proliferation of unlicensed cryptocurrency investment platforms targeting retail investors domestically. The 12.1 million dollar romance scam component in particular mirrors patterns documented locally, where victims who are often approached through social media or messaging applications are gradually drawn into fake investment platforms by individuals who first build emotional trust. With cross border crypto fraud difficult to trace and even harder to recover, Malaysian authorities have repeatedly stressed the importance of verifying broker and platform credentials through official regulatory channels before committing any funds.
